The usual suspects on-line and in the old media are getting themselves worked up that families with a Polygamous marriage are getting an increase in benefits. This is typical of the hysteria from the Daily Express
The not so hidden subtext is that these are Muslim families, and as such should not be allowed to claim benefits.
This claim originates with the Taxpayers Alliance, a right wing lobbying group which shares a building in Tufton Street with other similar lobbying groups which promote environment sceptic, pro-Brexit, anti-government ideologies. It’s funding is, predictably, opaque.
It was Tufton Street lobbyists which shaped Liz Truss’s fiscal meltdown.
The truth however is slightly different.
Polygamous marriages are illegal in the UK
Universal Credit does not recognise polygamous households in the benefit system. Any adults living in the household would each have to claim as a single person on the basis of their own circumstances.
Benefits such as Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance and Housing Benefit do recognise a small number of polygamous marriages which took place in a jurisdiction where polygamy is permitted. This number is very small and declining, since the Immigration Act 1988, it has not been possible for people polygamously married overseas to bring second wives to the UK through the spouse visa route.
Which means that the number of people getting angry about racist rage bait is a thousand times larger than the number of people actually claiming it.
Sadly reality is no match for the lurid nonsense being clicked liked and shared on-line.
Thousands of people condemn murder when it occurs, too. Does that make it ‘rage bait’? Polygamy is illegal in the UK. People are sick of migrants dictating UK policy- no polity can survive trying to mainatian more than one culture – but that’s the path the UK government seems to have taken. The UK should have just left politics to the rich white guys, at least they don’t think with their arses.
Why should we ignore criminals who profit from their criminality with the tacit assistance of the Government?
